SPRINGFIELD – The deadline to apply for full scholarships to the Abraham Lincoln and Leadership Summer Institute at the University of Illinois at Springfield has been extended to April 15.
The institute is a four-week residential program for Illinois students who will be entering their senior year of high school in fall 2003.
The educational experience focuses on Abraham Lincoln, his leadership, and its lasting impact on society through a combination of field trips, classroom experiences, student government, service learning, cultural and recreational events, and technological skill-building. Successful completion of the required seminar and one elective course in African-American studies, history, or English earns four hours of transferable college credit. Students live in Lincoln Residence Hall on the UIS campus and are supervised and assisted by mentor-counselors.
Scholarships cover tuition, fees, and lodging; participants are responsible only for the cost of traveling to and from Springfield.
The institute also hosts a two-week, noncredit program for high school sophomores and juniors, plus a graduate seminar for teachers.
More information about all of these programs, including application forms, is available at http://alpcgs.uis.edu/pphsp/lincinstitute, or contact Peggy Dunn by phone at (217) 206-7399 or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
