Year of Ecofeminism

In partnership with Student Governement Association

Ecofeminism is the social movement that regards the oppression of women and nature as interconnected. It is multidisciplinary and multi-constituency. Ecofeminist theorists extend their analyses to consider the interconnections between sexism, the domination of, racism, and social inequalities.

Each event’s contribution to the Year of EcoFeminism is unique: we identified artists, speakers, writers, and films based on our assessment of their relational qualities to the environment and women’s issues. As a result, we have the honor of presenting a variety of events that providing a well-rounded view of the many subtleties and interconnections of women and the environment.

In conversation with students and professionals, the UIS Women’s Center identified this year as the “Year of EcoFeminism.” As a society, we are situated at an environmental crossroads; the time is now to educate and promote environmental awareness — in all its intricacies. The UIS Women’s Center seeks to promote women collectively and individually; to provide a catalyst for growth; to serve as a resource for support; to increase the spirit of community; and to promote tolerance for diversity. Our work leads us to the undeniable interconnectedness of the environment with those very issues: women’s collective and individual personal, professional, spiritual, and economic health are dependent on the environment; thus was born the Year of EcoFeminism.
