Find Your Way Around UIS

Freshmen Moving In View Content

Welcome to UIS! The Office of Web Services has put together a set of resources to make our campus easy to access, with comfort and efficiency. Getting to campus locations can be a challenge for a new student, a parent and student visiting our campus, an attendee for a social event, etc. We hope that you will find the resources on this page useful.

Campus Accessibility

For a student or visitor who is blind or with low vision, navigation can be challenging. Being differently-abled, one faces additional challenges of learning to navigate our campus without the visual cues that are standard for others.

a) UIS Tactile Map

With the goal of making our campus more accessible, the Office of Web Services in collaboration with Student Affairs led the effort to put together a tactile map of the UIS campus. The map incorporates Braille, raised lines, high contrast printing, and large print.

b) Accessible Locations

Anyone who is differently-abled should have access to the multiple locations on campus. In addition, people with changing abilities due to aging can face difficulty accessing locations on campus. With this goal in mind, the Office of Web Services has created an orange highlighted layer within the interactive map that shows the location of accessible parking, curb cuts, etc.

Web Search

When a search is conducted from the university’s homepage, Google Search is used to search over 12,500 resources available on the University of Illinois Springfield family of websites. Another helpful tool is the A-Z Index.

When a search is conducted on a specific website, the search is restricted to the web resources for that website only. Once the search results are displayed, you can always expand your search again by clicking on the “Search UIS” radio button.

Web Accessibility

The Office of Web Services at the University of Illinois Springfield is passionate about accessibility. For the web, not only does law require it, it is the right thing to do.

“The Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act (IITAA) requires Illinois agencies and universities to ensure that their web sites, information systems, and information technologies are accessible to people with disabilities.”

The Office of Web Services has given the architecture of official UIS websites this accessibility and continues to maintain that quality level each year. Websites are tested using W3C Markup Validation Service and Functional Accessibility Evaluator. When the UIS websites were redesigned in 2013, Responsive Web Design was implemented to make website content accessible to visitors using various mobile devices.
