More OWS Projects:
Our primary work revolves around the UIS website: determining the structure, creating and maintaining websites, creating sophisticated technical web page features, and serving as the liaison to the campus in all web-related matters.
But we also produce many other multimedia and Internet projects, including:
  • Creating the format for the chancellor's monthly email newsletter;
  • Conducting mass emailings;
  • Creating slide shows and electronic media for the chancellor and other campus units;
  • Maintaining a photo database;
  • Producing campus podcasts including From the Chancellor, What's New on the UIS Website, UIS Presents..., and Faculty Spotlight.
We've also created a UIS mobile website, and have made many new-media updates to the campus Newsroom website.

Projects

The UIS Website Project

Over the past few years, the Office of Web Services has conducted a major revamp of the primary UIS Web site. We are using a Web Publishing System and Official Web Page Templates to recreate all department and academic program websites with three important issues in mind:

  • Recruitment of prospective students;
  • Technical support issues;
  • Web accessibility.

Production of new websites began in January 2006; we expect it will take until May 2009 to redevelop the majority of websites on the primary UIS Web Server.

Campus units will be informed when we are ready to recreate their websites. At that time, the Office of Web Services will construct your new Web site using the content you prepare. We will install special software on your computer, and teach you how to easily maintain your site.

See below for important information.

The UIS Website Project proceeds as follows:

Download the general information and materials you need to prepare for a new website.

  • The General Info Sheet includes basic information for everyone.

  • The Site Maps for academic and support units outline the content categories for official unit websites. They are based on the Official UIS Web Policy.

  • The Guidelines suggest a process for organizing website content and images.

  • The Best Practices and Web Style Guidelines will help you understand general principles about good website design and maintenance.

  • UIS Words and Phrases includes words and phrases used to recruit prospective students. You may use these in your website content.

Steps in the Process of Website Redevelopment at UIS:

Step One:
Based on the Site Map and the Guidelines, the content point-person from the unit gathers all content for the site and creates Plain Text files. If you have photographs, please include the original copies; do not edit the photographs.

Step Two:
Web Services determines the site's navigation and creates the basic site and basic pages.

Step Three:
Menus, content, and photos are added to the site. The Marketing department reviews the copy for the left side of the home page.

Step Four:
Department personnel review the site and suggest changes and additions.

Step Five:
Final changes are made by Web Services personnel.

Step Six:
Department personnel sign-off on the site via email. The site is then uploaded to the primary web server by Web Services.

Step Seven:
Department personnel are trained to maintain the site with special software that is installed on their computers.

Staging Server:
You can monitor progress of the redevelopment of your website at the following URL (available on-campus or via VPN only):

About Contribute Training:
Training sessions are by invitation only. Web Publishers and Writers will be invited to training when their new website is complete or almost ready.

(Hard-won experience has led us to not send a person to training before their new website is ready, no matter what the person's previous experience. You may have already had some web publishing experience in the past, but you have never worked with our templates, our web publishing system, our login system, and our servers. And in most cases, you may never have worked with Contribute.)

The training session is named Web Overview and Contribute Training. It lasts for 2 hours. You must attend the entire session to be given website access. The training is conducted by Munindra Khaund, Multimedia Education Coordinator in the Information Technology Services department (ITS).

Once you complete training, the ITS department will contact you to arrange a time to install Contribute software on your computer.

Web Style Guidelines:
Follow the Office of Web Services Web Style Guidelines (pdf) as you maintain your Contribute website.

Thank you for your cooperation and support.
The redevelopment of all UIS websites is a huge project, and we sincerely appreciate your willingness to particpate and your kind attention to all of the details.
