Girl 2 Girl Dreamspeakers

Grant Received From Sangamon County Community Foundation and Women for Women Fund

The UIS Volunteer & Civic Engagement Center and UIS Athletics has received a grant of $10,000 from the Sangamon County Community Foundation and Women for Women Fund to establish a new mentoring program in partnership with Springfield School District 186 called Girl 2 Girl DreamSpeakers. Approximately 40 UIS female student athletes will work with 120 8-10th grade girls in District 186 to:

1) Education and prepare girls for a lifetime of healthy living and self-respect;

2) Empower them to make informed decisions about their future; and

3) Enhance the possibility that they will attend college.

As part of this program, the UIS student-athletes and girls in Springfield School District 186 will have weekly meetings. In addition, the girls from 186 will be invited and transported to UIS for special programs and dinners.

The first program takes place on Thurs., Nov. 6, and will feature world-renowned Paralympic athlete and motivational speaker Jean Driscoll. Ms. Driscoll recently traveled to Beijing as part of the Presidential Delegation for the 2008 Olympics.
