Current Students – Getting Started
It is our goal to make service a part of the experience of every UIS student. Service provides you with opportunities to gain experience in your major field as well as to engage in areas you may be passionate about outside of your area of study. It is a great way to gain new perspective, to become a leader among your peers, and to feel connected to both UIS and the community. Before you begin volunteering through our office we encourage you to familiarize yourself with our guidelines for successful volunteering.
Have you recently done volunteer work?
Helping our office track your hours help you. We can find you/your student organizaiton when service award nominations are sought. We can create more service projects like those that were popular, and we can show everyone just how successful our service efforts have been.
One time service projects are great, but the Volunteer Center urges students to make a longer commitment to service. Our partnerships with Big Brothers Big Sisters and School District 186 allow students to serve approximately once a week for a semester or a year.

We also keep a directory of non-profit organizations that may have opportunities related to your interests.
Service Learning, Applied Study Term & Internships
Other Departments at UIS offer great opportunities to get involved during your time at UIS. The Department of Service-Learning combines academic learning, community service, and reflection. The Applied Study Term Program offer off-campus internships, projects, and travel opportunities for undergraduates to apply knowledge and explore career options in the “real” world. The Career Development Center connects students to jobs and internships that can help you advance your career before you graduate.
