Director of the Volunteer & Civic Engagement Center Kelly Thompson has several years of experience working and volunteering with area not-for-profits, including the American Heart Association, American Lung Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Ronald McDonald House, Springfield School District 186, and more. Kelly also has seen the positive effects of civic engagement through her past work for the Illinois House of Representatives on the policy, research and appropriations staff.
Kelly is also an adjunct instructor for the University of Illinois at Springfield and Lincoln Land Community College. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she won the Loren Reid award for best senior performance in the Communication department.
Kelly earned her Master of Arts in Communication from University of Illinois at Springfield, and in 2006-07 won the top nationwide communications award, the Rome Betts Award, and the Team Player Award, from the American Heart Association.
Kelly was named to the Springfield Business Journal's 2006 "Forty Under 40" leadership class and is a past recipient of the Outstanding Match of the Year Award from Big Brothers Big Sisters. Kelly began work at UIS on February 1, 2008, and is very passionate about bringing a greater and unified sense of service and volunteerism to the UIS campus.
In her spare time, Kelly enjoys volunteering, reading, golfing and running.
