Departmental goals and objectives
The goal of the economics program is to help students build strong conceptual thinking and problem-solving skills by understanding and applying economic theory to real world problems. Specific program objectives include the development of 1) basic knowledge of micro- and macroeconomic theory and their applications and quantitative methods of analysis, 2) skills in research using the theories and methods of economic analysis, and 3) skills for applying economic theories and models. 

Advising
New students must contact the department for initial advising to plan a program of study that reflects their interests and satisfies degree requirements. 

THE BACHELOR'S DEGREE
The B.A. in economics is designed to meet the standards set by the profession. Through its curriculum and faculty resources, the department seeks to prepare its graduates with the requisite skills and knowledge to perform successfully in careers in private enterprise as well as government or not-for-profit enterprises.  

Entrance requirements
All departments in the College of Business and Management require foundation knowledge in accounting, economics, mathematics, statistics, and the behavioral sciences. UIS courses that satisfy the foundation knowledge requirement include:

or ACC 311 Administrative Uses of Accounting
ECO 313 Statistics for Business and Economics
MAT 113 Business Calculus (or other calculus or finite math

Behavioral science course (psychology, sociology, etc.)  

A minimum GPA of 2.00 (C) is required in the foundation coursework for entry to the program core courses. Students will receive credit for Introduction to Microeconomics and Introduction to Macroeconomics, or equivalent.

A student must complete 60 semester hours of upper-division coursework to earn a B.A. in economics.

Students must complete the 20 hours of economics core courses in the UIS College of Business and Management. Students must earn a grade of C or better in economics core courses. In addition, students must maintain an average GPA of 3.00 (B) or better in the two theory courses, ECO 301 and ECO 302.  

New online economics degree
Effective fall, 2006, the Economics program will offer the bachelor’s degree in two formats: one for students participating in traditional classroom instruction and one for students who wish to complete their degree online. The online degree program allows students to participate in a dynamic online learning community and complete their coursework using the latest information technologies and educational resources via the worldwide web. This fully online program is designed for students with 60 hours of completed college credit who are unable to attend on campus classes because of distance, work or care giving issues that are incompatible with regularly scheduled class offerings. Admission to this program will be limited by enrollment capacity. Students who seek admission to the online program should complete: all general education credits as specified by the Illinois Articulation Initiative; all entrance requirements as stipulated in the catalog required for economics majors; a minimum GPA of 3.00 or higher achieved on all undergraduate courses completed to date; a demonstrated ability to write in the English language at the appropriate baccalaureate level; and access to the Internet, specified software, and experience with their use.

ECONOMICS MINOR
To earn a minor in economics, students must complete 16 semester hours of upper-division economics courses at UIS. Prerequisite coursework includes Introduction to Microeconomics and Introduction to Macroeconomics, or equivalent, or ECO 315. Required courses (or their equivalents) include:  

ECO 301 Intermediate Microeconomics  4 Hrs.
ECO 302 Intermediate Macroeconomics  4 Hrs.
Two upper-division economics courses  8 Hrs.

Total    16 Hrs.
