State Senator Kimberly Lightford, a UIS alum, was the featured speaker at the UIS Alumni in Government breakfast earlier this year. Chancellor Koch announced in a message to the campus community January 28 that UIS will keep its traditional nickname, Prairie Stars. Many alumni had opposed a change when the matter was under discussion last fall.
Award-winning journalist Chris Young, a longtime State Journal-Register writer and photographer, earned UIS’s Outstanding Master’s Thesis Award. The originator of the popular Friday Night Star Parties, Charlie Schweighauser, was honored by the University of Illinois Alumni Association this month for his distinguished service to the university.
