I am a Junior CLS major. I am a very laid back, easy-going guy. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and a lot of outdoor activities. I am a middle child with a younger brother and an older sister. I love participating in intramural sports here at UIS such as basketball and flag football. I also played one year of baseball my freshmen year here at UIS. My goal is to help students do the best they can in organic chemistry which is the class that I am the SI leader.

Hello! I am a junior Biology major with a pre-med concentration. After I graduate, I hope to go to vet school. This is my first year with The Learning Hub, and I am excited and very grateful for the opportunity to help my fellow biology students. I am a sophomore CAP Honors student and my major is chemistry. I am the SI Leader for CHE 141 and am looking forward to a great semester of helping students with the course! I have a pre-medicine concentration and hope to one day attend medical school and become a psychiatrist. Some of the things I enjoy are thrift shopping, spending time with family and friends, and learning about anything and everything. I am involved in the Alternative Spring Break organization and Psychology Club on campus. I love to stay busy and help others in any way I can!

Hello! I am a senior student in accounting major. Tutoring is an interesting experience especially in the Learning Hub and this is my second semester here. I wish to help more students with their study. After school, when bored, I always do puzzles of more than 500 pieces. Otherwise, I would hang out with friends and families, travel, take pictures of things or people around, listen to music, read books, go swimming, go to the theater or museum, etc. Even though I have decided to pursue a master degree in accounting, I still wish to know more about science and arts because they are always so mysterious and attractive for me.

Hello, my name is Josh. I am I senior biology major with a minor in chemistry here at UIS. I have a great interest in science, particularly in the science of medicine, which is why I aspire to a career in the medical field as a physician assistant. I also love the basic sciences, which is why I am currently involved in basic research in geriatrics at the SIU School of medicine, and also here at UIS with Dr. Vazquez and Dr. Johnson. In my free time I like to play my guitar and sing in a band, ride my bicycle, hang out with my friends, go hiking, and brew beer. Science can be hard, but just like most things in life it just takes time and patients to learn the concepts.

With a passion for language and literature, I hope to share some of my skills with you as we work on your essays, projects, and assignments here in the Learning Hub.

Writing isn’t easy.  From developing an idea to doing research to writing a first draft to editing it into a finished essay is a difficult

and complex process.   I’m a second year graduate student in the Liberal and Integrative Studies program and a journalism school graduate.  My experience working with other writers – some new, some not so new – convinces me that writing a college paper doesn’t have to be a dreaded, frustrating chore.

I enjoy the entire writing process, and I hope to have the opportunity to work with you to improve your writing – and maybe make it a little more enjoyable for you, too.

I am a graduate student in the Liberal and Integrative Studies Program, where I am pursuing a combined Environmental Studies and Public Administration Master’s Degree. At UIS, I am actively involved on campus and am a member of various school organizations. In my leisure time, when I’m not watching The Simpsons, Celebrity Apprentice, Shark Tank, Undercover Boss or Dr. Who, I can be found at the UIS TRAC enjoying one of the many fitness classes, riding my bicycle around town or attending a concert.

I love science, am fluent in Spanish and writing has always been my forte. At the Learning Hub, I can use my passion for writing to help students. However, the best part of working at the Learning Hub is seeing that smile of accomplishment on a student’s face at the end of the tutoring session – for me, a smile at the end of the day is a sign of a job well-done. I look forward to meeting you and seeing your smiling face at the Learning Hub!

Hey all y’all! My name’s Michael, and I am a senior Capital Scholars student majoring in Sociology and Political Science with an interest in rural education and agricultural policy. Lisa Simpson is my spirit animal, and I am also a student-athlete, Go Prairie Stars! You better be darn tootin’ sure that education is a crucial tool for egalitarian societies as publicly funded education systems— especially those within rural communities that serve as a collective identity tool— boast intersectionality with intellectual and economic growth in said places. You should come hang out with me and we’ll work on your composition skills, totes serious!

I am seriously looking forward in being your writing tutor this semester! Not only will it be an extremely rewarding experience for me, but also, a magnificent opportunity to learn volumes! I also love to hear the stories of people when I meet them. Allow me to tell you mine:

Patrick G. Anderson Avilés was born and raised in Honduras, Central America. After getting a B.A. in Journalism and a M. A. in Geography from Louisiana State University, he returned to Central America, where he taught high school for several years. During his stint as a Social Studies teacher, Patrick was awarded a Scholarship for an M. Ed. which he completed in 2004. Following his childhood dreams, he then pursued aviation and flew as a turbo-prop Captain “island hopping” in the Western Caribbean. Residing now in Chatham IL, Patrick enjoys cooking, reading, and spending quality time with family. Laying down an intricate World Beat groove on his drum set is also one of his favorite pastimes. Patrick is professionally fluent in English, Spanish, and able to converse in très basique French.
