The 50,000-square-foot Student Union, currently scheduled to open in 2016, will have a total cost of $21.75 million.
State appropriations may not be used for a Student Union because the building (an “auxiliary enterprise”) is not directly related to instruction, research, or service.
As a consequence, UIS will be raising private support for the Student Union. The University of Illinois Foundation, the official fundraising and private gift-receiving organization for the University of Illinois system, will be assisting in this endeavor.
We are confident that friends and alumni of UIS donors will recognize the vital importance of the building, both to the University and to the community. Support from these visionary donors will provide about half of the cost, either through gifts or pledges.
Student fees, together with other funds, will provide about $13.75 million for the project. Fees will equal from $25 to $200 per semester based on undergraduate or graduate status and number of academic credit hours. Students enrolled in online degree-seeking programs will not pay the student union fees.
Students approved the fees through a referendum, passed in April 2012.
