A Student Union will change life as we know it on the UIS campus for everyone, for students first, but also for faculty and staff and for the many visitors who come to UIS to take advantage of our excellent programs, cultural events, scholarly lectures and library.
The new Student Union at UIS will be beautiful, functional and environmentally friendly (LEED Gold Certified) – a building that everyone associated with UIS will take pride in.
A building like this requires an investment. Because state funds cannot be used to pay for auxiliary services such as those provided at a student union, friends and alumni of UIS will need to take the lead role in providing support for the project.
UIS is indeed fortunate to have so many community members and alumni who care about the university. We are confident these visionary donors will want to contribute to the lasting difference the student union will make to students, the campus, and the central Illinois community. Their role is crucial, and their generosity will be long remember.
The UIS Student Union Scope
Total Building cost is estimated to be $20 million, based on a building size of 50,000 - 60,000 square feet.
Private support through donations will provide approximately $10 million. Students will provide the remainder of the cost through student fees – but this fee will not begin until the building is actually open.
Here are a few other Student Unions that have opened recently that are of similar size to what we are proposing. The pictures and descriptions help give a sense of what could be possible.
Centre College (KY) – Campus Center (Opened New 2009 – 46,560 gross square footage)
Hillsdale College (MI) – Student Union (Opened New 2007 – 54,000 gross square footage)
