Student Union Advisory Referendum
The Student Government Association of University of Illinois Springfield is proposing the construction of a new Student Union. If built, this facility would likely include (based on a recent campus-wide student survey) enhanced dining choices, a game room, lounge and study spaces, a pub, student organization space, large programming space, outdoor gathering areas, and various other amenities. The Offices of the Student Government Association, the Volunteer and Civic Engagement Center, Student Organizations and Office of Student Life would also be in the new facility.
First by Donors then by Students
Since state funds CANNOT be used to construct a Student Union, the building will have to be funded entirely without state contributions. Funding will be funded initially by donors and once the building is completed by student fees.
UIS has many generous donors, including friends and alumni, corporations, foundations, faculty, staff and administrators, and many other generous entities. We are confident donors will contribute over half of the necessary funding. Student fees will not begin until the Student Union is actually open.
We are anticipating the Student Union would be completed by Fall, 2015. The university is committed to raising some of the total building cost through fund raising.
The student fee would be implemented as follows when the building opens:
- $200.00 per student per semester for full-time undergrad students
- $100.00 per student per semester for part-time undergrad students
- $25.00 per credit hour for graduate students with a cap of 8 hours
Students enrolled in an on-line degree seeking program will not pay any student union fees.
