UIS students, whether communication majors or not, who are interested in learning about electronic media including radio and television are invited to join the UIS chapter of the National Broadcasting Society. Membership is open to all UIS students, not just communication majors. An organizational meeting will be held on Monday, November 13, 2006 beginning at 4:30 p.m. in UHB-4079. Interested UIS students, undergraduate and graduate, both currently enrolled and alums, as well as industry professionals, are encouraged to contact Dr. Jim Grubbs, the NBS faculty advisor, at:
grubbs.jim@uis.edu or by phone at (217) 206-7365
At the UIS campus, NBS has a rich history of student participation particularly during the 1980s and early 1990s when it was one of the nation’s premiere NBS chapters. Students produced and participated in video competitions, completed a number of media-based public service projects, and networked with well-known industry professionals. Competitive scholarships and both regional and national conventions round out the variety of NBS activities. A number of industry professionals have already committed to membership to ensure students the opportunity for first-hand experiences and mentoring in the electronic media field.
The National Broadcasting Society is a student and professional society of over eighty-five chapters on college, university, community college and high school campuses. NBS encourages and rewards scholarship and accomplishment among students of broadcasting, establishes meaningful communication between student and professional broadcasters, and fosters integrity in the use of the powerful instruments of radio, television, film, cable and its many associated businesses and industries.
NBS is also associated with AERho (Alpha Epsilon Rho) the national honor society of electronic media students. All members of Alpha Epsilon Rho are members of NBS, however, you must also meet national honor standards in order enter AERho. Membership in AERho is open to undergraduate communication majors only who have completed a minimum of nine (9) semester hours of credit in the mass media track of the UIS Communication Program and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 in all mass media courses as well as a cumulative 3.00 minimum on all courses (on a 4.0 scale), and are in the upper 35% of all UIS students. Requirements for graduate students are somewhat tougher.
