Living an Extraordinary Life

In celebration of Disability Awareness Week, I’m highlighting a UIS graduate who was recently named Ms. Wheelchair Illinois.

Kimberly Pate has lived an extraordinary life and can inspire us all. A traffic accident at 18 left her a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the shoulders down. But, determined to live her life to the fullest, she went to Miami and took part in the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.Kim transferred to UIS in 1998 to work toward a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. At UIS, Kim took advantage of many of Disability Services’ offerings and was impressed with both the services available and the accessibility of the campus. In fact, found her experience at UIS to be the best of the three schools she attended.Kim recently embarked on another incredible journey, competing in and winning the 2004 Ms. Wheelchair Illinois pageant. Contestants are judged on their self-perception, their accomplishments since the onset of their disability, and their ability to speak about disability-related issues.

Kim is currently a licensed professional counselor at the Cass County Mental Health Agency in Beardstown.
