Chancellor’s Academic Professional Excellence Award presented


Jim Korte, Associate Vice- Chancellor/ Dean of Students at UIS, is the winner of the 12th annual Chancellor’s Academic Professional Excellence (CAPE) Award. The award was presented by Chancellor Susan J. Koch at the ceremony on April 23, 2015.



Annual Day Of Silence is observed at UIS.

During this year’s Annual Day of Silence event, slam poet group L.Y.R.I.C. did a spoken word performance to help “break the silence.”

After the event L.Y.R.I.C. poses with students and Kerry Poynter, interim Executive Director of the UIS Diversity Center.

Walk a mile 2015 056Students, faculty, staff and others in “Walk A Mile

On April 18, men and women gathered in downtown Springfield to support the movement against sexual violence. Men were encouraged to wear high heels to show support and understand what it’s like walking a mile in women’s shoes.



 Asian Carnival held at UIS

On April 17, the Asian Student Organization held their first annual Asian Carnival at UIS.

Students participate in Alternative Spring Break, Dance Marathon



  UIS students volunteer in Mississippi as part of Alternative Spring Break

Twenty students and two staff members from UIS spent  their spring break working with children in Biloxi, Mississippi, and helping with a coastal erosion prevention project.



More than 80 UIS students participated in the dance marathon to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network at St. John’s Hospital. This event was organized by the Volunteer and Civic Engagement Center.

Black History Event: “10 Rules for dealing with the police”

UIS graduate and law enforcement officer Robert Moore, retired police chief Odie Carpenter, NOBLE member Fay Brookes, Sherif Charlene Williams, and Leutinet Brad Strickler speak to students about how to deal with the police in the proper way.


Journal students win awards in annual Illinois College Press Association competition

Staff members of The Journal, the UIS student newspaper, received six journalism awards at the 2015 Illinois College Press Association convention. Professional journalists throughout Illinois judged contest entries.


UIS 2015 Career Fair held

More than 400 students, University alumni, and Springfield area residents attend the February 2015 Springfield Collegiate Career Fair.

A Henna Hand Painting demonstration was underway in February at the UIS Women’s Center.Sponsoring the activity were the UIS Indian Student Organization, Indian Dance Organization and Office of International Student Services.
