UIS students volunteer in New York City as part of Alternative Spring Break
Twenty eight students and two staff members we will be going to NYC to partner with Youth Services Opportunities Program. YSOP is an organization that will place our volunteers in different shelters and soup kitchens throughout the week and provide opportunities for us to meet and learn from people that have faced homelessness first hand.
“Each year, Alternative Spring Break seeks out to create a trip that provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for UIS students,” said Brittani Provost, student president of UIS Alternative Spring Break. Mark Dochterman, director of the UIS Volunteer and Civic Engagement Center, said, “this is an amazing opportunity for students to go beyond talking about these issues and personally engage in volunteer work.
Our staff of professionals is committed to the enhancement of student leadership and the cultivation of their civic engagement. Student Affairs directly supports students’ life long development of personal, academic, and social skills.
Our strong community partnerships and deep involvement actively engage students and faculty in the larger social system and promote service learning, social justice and civic engagement. We offer a safe, open, welcoming community that nurtures healthy personal development and a sense of belonging to everyone in the campus community.
We work to attract, to hire, and to retain students, faculty, and staff of all backgrounds. Our goal is a rich multicultural environment. Student Affairs emphasizes to its students and staff a diverse, tolerant campus community.
Dana, the guide dog, gets thumbs up from kindergarteners at Riverton Elementary School for being so well-behaved. Dana belongs to UIS freshman Raven Wilson. Wilson, along with fellow student Alicia Woodman, visited with the elementary students on behalf of Disability Services to tell the kids what life at college is like when you live with disabilities.
