Archaeological Field School

UIS Archaeological Field School in Germany, 2007

This year, thanks to funding from the National Science Foundation, we will be able to provide full support (airfare, housing, meals) for 6 undergraduate students and 1 graduate student to participate in archaeological fieldwork in Germany. The program runs from July 18 - August 16, 2007. Students will contribute to an on-going research project on economic diversity among early farming villages in southern Germany, beginning ca. 5400 B.C.

The project is a collaboration between the University of Illinois at Springfield and the University of Tübingen in Germany. Principal investigators are: UIS Professor Lynn Fisher; Dr. Rainer Schreg (Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum, Mainz, Germany); Dr. Susan Harris (University of California, Santa Barbara; Research Associate, UIS); and Tübingen archaeologist Corina Knipper, M.A. Other participating faculty in the field course include Professor Linda Grimm (Oberlin College).

UIS student Mary Thomas (HIS) and Lynn Fisher on an excursion to the historic city of Ulm, on the Danube.Students in the field school will be trained in archaeological excavation techniques, learn to identify and map Stone Age sites, and gain experience in recognizing and cataloging the kinds of tools and pottery made in this region from Neolithic to Roman times. During the 2007 season, we will carry out test excavations on Neolithic sites near the modern city of Ulm. Learn more or apply for the field school .
