Move-in day for residential students kicks off the UIS tradition called Welcome Week every fall. Nearly 1,100 students moved into UIS housing this fall, an all-time record. In the residence halls, parents help turn a dorm room into a campus home. UIS housing includes two residence halls, townhouses, apartments, and family housing. Locating your classrooms before classes actually begin is a good idea.
Activities from Capture the Flag to an ice cream social are scheduled during Welcome Week to help students get involved. UIS Chancellor Richard Ringeisen and his wife Carolyn host a campus-wide picnic during Welcome Week each year. This year, every seat at the picnic was taken as faculty and staff mingled with students in perfect weather. Free food…the perfect start to the academic year. Held one week after move-in day, the picnic gives friends a chance to reflect on the first few days of classes.
The first day of classes was August 24. The Involvement Expo is held during Welcome Week to give new students opportunities to get involved. This year’s Expo featured nearly 50 student organizations and a few Springfield-area businesses. Connecting students with similar interests is the goal of the Involvement Expo. UIS’ Career Development Center sponsors the Foot in the Door Fair, bringing students face-to-face with potential employers.
Welcome Week is a good time to meet your professors before the academic year gets underway. Enjoying the weather on the UIS quad. The Foot in the Door Fair brought 52 employers to campus this year to discuss jobs and internship opportunities. New classes, new friends. Welcome, Class of 2013!
