Erin Wilson
candidate for Senator for Transfer Students

Establishing Community

As a first year student at the University of Illinois at Springfield, I am currently trying to find my place in the community at this institution. This step is one that many students take during their transition either from home or from another school, and it is not always an easy one to make. I believe it is very important for every student at UIS to not only find their place at this institution, but also to feel as if they are a part of the community that makes up this university. This feeling of self-belonging is a very powerful thing; it may even be the difference between a great college experience and an experience that results in transfer or drop out. This community is now our home, and home is a place where everyone should feel welcome, comfortable, and at ease. As your senator of transfer students, I would do my very best to make sure that every student is able to find their place in our community at UIS.

It is my duty to represent my constituents to the best of my ability. If elected, I would do nothing short of that. As a student at UIS, your issues are my issues. When brought to my attention, I would work to resolve these issues in a way that benefits every student at UIS. Abraham Lincoln once said, “A house divided cannot stand;” I believe this statement to be very true. If elected Senator of Transfer Students, I would, to the best of my abilities, see to it that our community finds the balance that makes it possible to remain unified. It is for these reasons that I ask for your vote in the Fall of 2009 Election of Student Senators.
