My name is Erika Snyder, and this is my first year running for a SGA office. As a Junior Capital Scholar student at the University of Illinois at Springfield, a psychology major pursuing a career in law/politics, who happens to play basketball, I think there are a couple of key issues that need to be more concentrated on here at UIS for the betterment of the institution.
In order for the scholars program to continue to excel, I think the University needs to concentrate on making the program more beneficial to its students. I think there should be more positive tradeoffs to attract future students and more benefits on campus available to those currently enrolled in the Capital Scholars Program. With the University growing in population, it is important to not forget about the program and to continue instilling its values in future students.
I think student involvement is the most important element of any organization. It is essential for the students on campus to be informed regularly as to what is going on and given the opportunity to voice their opinions on any of the issues discussed by the SGA. As a sibling of a freshman, I regularly see the importance of having someone aware of campus activities. As a result, I believe it is necessary for the relationship between upper and lower classmen to be more cohesive.
Because I am a female athlete on campus, I think it is important for people/groups on campus to better advocate for our athletes. If given the opportunity, athletics can make an unbreakable foundation for a university. I think it is imperative to celebrate the athletes and their accomplishments regardless of their sport and give recognition to the groups who regularly support them. Because UIS is a new institution, the athletes are regularly making history and should obtain more recognition for their achievements.
I believe in quality verse quantity, and while these are not the only issues I believe are important on campus, these are some that I am most passionate about and feel are most unique. As a result of believing strongly in the issues listed above, I campaign for your permission to actively fight for you
