IMMERSION COURSE
EXL 202: Learning Serving Homelessness in Chicago-

One very exciting project of the Service-Learning program is the creation of Immersion Courses. What is a Service-Learning Immersion course?

•An Immersion course can fulfill either ECCE Engagement or ECCE Elective requirements (3 credits)

•It requires 60 hours of direct service and seminars throughout the semester

•The course is offered online.

What makes this course different from traditional courses is that students are given the opportunity to immerse themselves in the service experience and the surrounding culture. In the summer of 2010, UIS will be offering a summer experience in Chicago! About half of the required hours are completed during the trip. June 17 - June 24

The goal of a Service-Learning Immersion course is to give students a chance to learn about social issues first hand. The course takes a close and personal look at social issues that cannot be replicated in a classroom. Students are allowed to immerse themselves in social issues so that these problems no longer seem far away. Instead the issues are right there, surrounding the students. This allows students a chance to truly understand social issues and to learn ways in which they can make positive change.

This course combines relevant and meaningful service with the community, enhanced academics, learning and purposeful civic learning. Students will plan and implement a project to meet a community need. Students have an opportunity to work with a non-profit partner in Chicago for 4 days providing much needed assistance. This is a unique opportunity that pairs sociological theory with community service. Through this course stduents are constantly making the link between "lived" experiences in the community and the concepts and theories learned in other courses. (Blended; offered Summer semester)

The cost of Summer 2010 experience is approximately $450/person and would include....

      • Lodging for 5 nights
      • Breakfast and lunches
      • Transportation around Chicago and suburbs
