The Master of Public Health degree requires successful completion of 48 semester hours of coursework, 24 hours of which are required core courses, including a 4-hour internship (Table A). The 24 hours of electives must be in a specific area of study either within or outside the Department (Table B). Students have the option to customize their area of study or select from one or more of the available public health Graduate Certificates. Students must consult with their adviser before registering to develop an educational plan and choose the appropriate elective hours. Only external electives courses approved by the program will be included in the 48 hours required for the degree.

The closure experience is a comprehensive written examination based on applied case study designed to test students' ability to integrate the knowledge that they have gained from the core curriculum. Students must complete the core curriculum before they are eligible for the exam. A student must successfully complete the exam within one year after completing course work for the degree. Students who do not complete the examination during their final semester of study must enroll in MPH 583 (zero credit hours, one billable hour) until they pass the exam.
