director's welcome

Dr. Loretta F. Meeks, Professor Emeritus

I have had a rewarding career here at the University of Illinois at Springfield. In the years that I have been at the university, I have taken on various roles in the Teacher Education Program and the university at-large, including program chairperson, director of student teaching, director of a mathematics initiative for elementary students, Project Students, Teachers and Parents and currently director of Project Midstate Student Support for Teaching. At the university level, I have served as committee chairperson in a broad spectrum of areas from curriculum as chair of the Undergraduate Council to the chairperson of several personnel initiatives. In all these roles however I consider teaching as one of the most important.

I believe that education should be accessible to all and delivered in an equitable manner. Collaboration not isolation is essential to providing such an education. Thus, the program that I direct is one of the university's most successful partnerships. Project Midstate Student Support for Teaching (MSS) is a model program designed to provide local students, who are interested in pursuing teaching as a career, access to higher education.

I welcome you to explore the programs and opportunities that I am engaged in at UIS. My colleagues at the university as well as the staff in Project MSS welcome you to an educational experience that is inclusive and designed to be responsive to your needs. As you explore the many educational opportunities available to you and your family at UIS, it is my desire that you find this site informative and beneficial as a student, educator, and/or parent.
