UIS events mark September 11 observance

SPRINGFIELD – The University of Illinois at Springfield will observe the fifth anniversary of the events of 911 with a series of programs. All of the events will take place Monday, September 11, on the UIS campus and are free and open to the public.

The campus chapter of College Republicans will sponsor a memorial display of small U.S. flags in the Quad area near University Hall. The flags will remain in place from Monday morning through Tuesday evening.

Beginning at noon, the International Studies program will sponsor a brown bag presentation titled "Five Years After: The Attacks of 9/11 and Their Consequences" in conference room F, located on the lower level of the Public Affairs Center.  Discussion will focus on "The Impact on the Muslim World," led by Baker Siddiquee, associate professor of Economics; "The War on Terror and the Middle East," led by Erik Freas, assistant professor of History; "Legal and Policy Issues in the War on Terror," led by Pinky Wassenberg, dean of the College of Public Affairs and Administration; and "American Foreign Policy Before and After 9/11," led by Steve Schwark, professor of Political Studies.

The College Republicans will also sponsor a screening of the film "United 93" beginning at 9:11 p.m. in Brookens Auditorium, located in the lower level of Brookens Library.
