Led by New Orleans native Wynton Marsalis, artistic director of jazz at Lincoln Center, and emceed by actor Laurence Fishburn, the concert features a guest list including Terence Blanchard, Cyrus Chestnut, Peter Cincotti, Bill Cosby, Elvis Costello, Robert De Niro, Paquito D'Rivera, Jon Hendricks, Diana Krall, Abbey Lincoln, Bette Midler, Dianne Reeves, Marcus Roberts, Paul Simon, Meryl Streep, James Taylor, McCoy Tyner, Cassandra Wilson, and Buckwheat Zydeco.

Said Marsalis, “New Orleanians are blues people. We are resilient, so we are sure that our city will come back...We need people with their prayers, their pocketbooks, and above all their sense of purpose to show the world just who the modern American is, and then we’ll put our city back together in even greater fashion. We’re only as civilized as our level of hospitality.”

NPR and its member stations requested and received a waiver from the Federal Communications Commission in order to pre-empt regular programming to fundraise for another entity.
