Discussion will examine American journalism and the Middle East

September 30, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - “Reporting the Arab and Muslim Worlds: American Journalism, Objectivity, and a Different Place” is the subject of a presentation to be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 6, in Brookens Auditorium at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The auditorium is located on the lower level of Brookens Library on the UIS campus. The program is free and open to the public.

Featured speaker will be Marda Dunsky, assistant professor in the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University.

With the United States engaged in the Middle East to an unprecedented degree, American journalists are faced with the challenge of reporting on Arab and Muslim societies and their relation to American interests with clarity, depth, and balance.  Dunsky will discuss these challenges and how well the media is doing its job.

Dunsky’s experience as a reporter includes two years as Arab affairs reporter for the Jerusalem Post, covering the Palestinian minority in Israel, and a stint as features and national/foreign desk editor at the Chicago Tribune. At Northwestern, she teaches newspaper editing, global journalism, and reporting the Arab and Muslim worlds.

UIS sponsors of this event are the Capital Scholars Faculty-in-Residence program and the Speakers Award Committee.
