UIS to host foreign and independent film series

September 24, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - The Division of Student Affairs at the University of Illinois at Springfield is sponsoring an Independent and Foreign Film Series on Friday nights this fall. All films are shown at 7 p.m. in Brookens Auditorium, located on level one of Brookens Library on the UIS campus. Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Remaining films include:

October 1Rivers and Tides.  Sculptor Andy Goldsworthy works with such media as ice, driftwood, bracken, leaves, stones, dirt, and snow and his studio is often an open field, a beach, a river, creek, or forest. This film by Thomas Riedeisheimer won the Golden Gate Award Grand Prize for Best Documentary at the 2004 San Francisco International Film Fest.

October 8The Magdalene Sisters.  From the 1960s until the late 1990s an estimated 30,000 young Irish Catholic women were sent by their families to do penance for their sins by working in for-profit laundries run by the nuns of the Sisters of Magdalene Order. This 2003 drama by Peter Mullen is based on real events.

October 15Spirited Away.  This animated tale tells the story of a family who, during their journey to a new home, are lured into what seems to be an abandoned amusement park. Inside the park, the parents soon fall under the spell of an evil witch and are turned into pigs. As Chihiro, the daughter, tries to find a way to rescue her mother and father, she is befriended by some very eccentric creatures. Directed by Hiyao Miyazaki and featuring the voices of Daveigh Chase, Lauren Holly, Michael Chiklis, Jason Marsden, and Suzanne Pleshette.

October 22The Fog of War. Robert McNamara was U.S. Secretary of Defense during the Cuban Missile Crisis and much of the Vietnam War. However, he was many other things as well, including a graduate of the Harvard Business School, a colonel in the Air Force during World War II, and president of Ford Motor Company. When McNamara was 85 years old, filmmaker Errol Morris gave him the chance to look back on his career and talk about the decisions he made and the influence he had on world events.

October 29Monster. Charlize Theron won an Academy Award as Best Actress for her performance as prostitute and serial killer Aileen Wuornos, executed by the state of Florida in 2002 for the murder of six men. Though she admitted the killings, Wuornos maintained that each man had violently attacked her during a sexual encounter and she shot them all in self-defense. Co-stars Christina Ricci.

November 5 – The House of Yes. Marty, a wealthy young man, invites his unsophisticated girlfriend Lesly home for Thanksgiving to meet his family.  Chief among this dysfunctional group is Marty’s twin sister, Jackie-O, whose hobbies include re-enacting the JFK assassination, complete with fake blood and her brother as victim. Directed by Mark Waters and based on the play by Wendy MacLeod.

November 12Pieces of April. April Burns, the black sheep of her family, has left the suburbs for an apartment on New York’s Lower East Side. With her family on their way for Thanksgiving dinner and faced with a broken oven, April goes searching among her bizarre new neighbors for a useable kitchen. Stars Katie Holmes; directed by Peter Hedges.
