UIS Visual Arts Gallery to present “Aids of Language”

September 23, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - “Aids of Language: Paintings by Thom Whalen” will be on display at the Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Illinois at Springfield from October 6 through 28.  The gallery will host an evening with the artist on Thursday, October 7, beginning with a talk at 5:30 p.m. followed by a reception from 6 to 8 p.m.  The talk, reception, and exhibit are free and open to the public.

Working in the tradition of mentors Jan van Eyck and Peter Saul, Whalen uses strong graphic images to create self-described “visual pantomimes” open to interpretation by the viewer.

Whalen has participated in numerous invitational and faculty art exhibitions in the United States, as well as the Pletscheef Institute Exhibition in St. Petersburg, Russia, where he received an award for excellence in enamels. Whalen is currently associate professor of art at Lincoln Land Community College.

The Visual Arts Gallery is located in room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday.  For further information, contact Emily Laverty by phone at 206-6506 or by e-mail at visarts-ga@uis.edu.
