Taste of UIS lunchtime lecture to discuss American higher education

September 9, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - The University of Illinois Alumni Association at UIS will present “Progress Lost? American Higher Education,” the first program in this fall’s Taste of UIS: Distinguished Faculty/Alumni Lunchtime Lecture Series, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, September 23, at Maldaner’s Upstairs, 222 South Sixth St., Springfield. Reservations are required and should be made no later than Friday, September 17.

Naomi B. Lynn, UIS chancellor emerita, will reflect on her years in education and provide insights into the current status of this country’s educational system, a product of the era of accelerated progress that followed World War II.  Lynn will also share her perspectives on the important role public education plays in producing a fully educated citizenry and the need for strong public support of higher education.

The second program in the series will be Thursday, October 21, when UIS faculty members Michael Lemke and Keith Miller will present “Floodplain of Dreams,” an overview of the impending restoration of 7,000 acres of the Emiquon floodplain.

Cost for each program – $18 per person, $13 for Alumni Association members and their guests – includes a hot buffet lunch.  To make reservations, call Alumni Relations at (217) 206-7395, register on-line at www.uiaa.org/spfld/, or e-mail alumni@uis.edu.
