UIS Alumni Association to sponsor lunchtime lecture series

September 1, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - The University of Illinois Alumni Association at UIS will sponsor A Taste of UIS: Distinguished Faculty/Alumni Lunchtime Lectures, a series of three monthly presentations to be held at Maldaner’s Upstairs, 222 South Sixth St., Springfield. The programs are open to the public; however, reservations are required.

The first program, on Thursday, September 23, will present UIS Chancellor Emerita Naomi B. Lynn discussing “Progress Lost? American Higher Education.” Lynn will reflect on her years in education and provide insights into the current status of higher education in this country and the role public education plays in producing a fully educated citizenry.

On Thursday, October 21, faculty members Michael Lemke (biology) and Keith Miller (computer science) will speak on “Floodplain of Dreams.” This fall, the Nature Conservancy will begin restoring 7,000 acres of Illinois River floodplain to its pre-Civil War state.  Lemke and Miller, both founding members of UIS’ new Emiquon Field Station, will discuss the scientific, cultural, and historical significance of the project.

On Thursday, November 18, Ronald McNeil, dean of the College of Business and Management, will present “Nanotechnology: How It Might Change Your Life.” McNeil will describe how scientific discoveries and manipulation of particles at sub-atomic levels have the potential to create products previously undreamed of, change education, and revolutionize the economy.

All three programs are set for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and include a hot buffet lunch. Cost for each is $18 per person, $13 for Alumni Association members and their guests. Make reservations no later than one week in advance of the event by calling Alumni Relations at (217) 206-7395, registering on-line at www.uiaa.org/spfld/, or e-mailing alumni@uis.edu.
