UIS police lieutenant graduates from FBI academy

September 15, 2003

SPRINGFIELD - Lt. Larry Griffiths of the University of Illinois at Springfield Police Department was among 241 law enforcement officers to graduate from the FBI National Academy in ceremonies held September 5 at FBI headquarters in Quantico, Virginia. Griffiths is the first member of the UIS police force to attend the academy, which offers 10 weeks of advanced investigative, management, and fitness training to law enforcement agencies around the world.

Participants must be nominated to the program by a superior officer or other civic official. The average period between nomination and acceptance is five years; however UIS Police Chief Don Mitchell had submitted Griffiths' name in 2001.

This was the 214th session of the academy, which has graduated nearly 37,000 students representing nearly 150 countries since it was founded in 1935.
