UIS’ Lincoln Presidential Center publishes third edition of Governing Illinois

September 10 , 2003

SPRINGFIELD – Center Publications, part of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Center for Governmental Studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield, announces the publication of the third edition of Governing Illinois, the classic textbook that for more than a decade has offered students in civics classes from middle school through college a compact, complete guide to the inner workings of state government.

Written by Illinois teachers and edited by James Banovetz and Rodd Whelpley, the book engages young citizens by introducing them to the governing process and encouraging them to become involved in issues that affect their lives. The text shows through real-world examples how legislative concepts are put into action.

Updated with new material to reflect the 2002 elections, the third edition also offers an interactive website that keeps the information current by connecting students to issues, experts, and reference materials. Through the site, students can ask questions of government experts, talk to students in civics classes at other schools, and link to the official state webpage and other related sites.

Copies of Governing Illinois are available for $15 each for one to nine copies, and $9 each for 10 or more copies (plus $3 shipping and handling for the first book and 50 cents for each additional book).

To order or to get more information, contact Center Publications by phone at (217) 206-6502 or order online at http://ipa.uis.edu/govern/ .
