UIS events observe September 11

September 8 , 2003

SPRINGFIELD – The University of Illinois at Springfield will observe the second anniversary of the events of 9-11 with “Days of Understanding, Hope, and Healing: Remembering September 11.” Members of the campus and local communities are invited to join together to pay tribute to the victims and survivors of the national tragedy in a series of free, public events that focus on mind, body, and spirit.

“Gandhi and Non-Violence: The Legacy” will be the focus from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, September 10, as UIS Professor Emeritus Proshanta Nandi opens discussion in his course on non-violence to the public. The class meets in room 3 F, on the third level of the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus.

A candlelight vigil will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 11, at the Women's Peace and Friendship Garden, located near the UIS pond (adjacent to the campus police department on the northeast side of campus). The vigil will provide an opportunity to gather as a group to pay tribute to the victims and survivors and to remember.

Coincidentally and as part of UIS’ commitment to civic engagement, students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to take part in service projects in their local communities. Information about volunteer opportunities is available by contacting the UIS Office of Student Volunteers and Service Learning at 206-7716, or on the web at www.volunteerillinois.org.

UIS sponsors of these events are the Office of Student Volunteers and Service Learning and the Office of Student Life. For more information, call 206-6665.
