SPRINGFIELD -- WUIS (91.9 Springfield)
and WIPA (89.3 Pittsfield) will change its Saturday night jazz programming
starting October 1, with the addition of a program that takes listeners on a
jazz-infused walk along the river in San Antonio, Texas.
Riverwalk, Live from the Landing is an hour-long program
that celebrates the lives and music of America’s greatest jazz musicians, past
and present. Co-hosts are Grammy Award-winning storyteller David Holt and San
Antonio bandleader/jazz club owner Jim Cullum Jr. Each week, the show salutes jazz pioneers through live performances
by the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, combined with more intimate and revealing musical
biographies.
“Riverwalk is a welcome addition to our jazz line-up and will be
entertaining whether listeners are getting in the mood for an evening out or
simply want quality entertainment while spending the night at home,” explained
WUIS general manager Brad Swanson.
Riverwalk will be heard on WUIS at 7 p.m. Saturdays
and replaces Billy Taylor’s Jazz at the Kennedy Center, which National
Public Radio has stopped producing. Jazz Profiles with Nancy Wilson, which
has been airing at 7 p.m. Saturday, will be heard an hour later, at 8 p.m. The
final Billy Taylor Jazz, with guest Jane Ira Bloom, will air on WUIS on
September 28.
Upcoming Riverwalk shows include:
October 5 – “Bourbon Street
Top Ten: The Jim Cullum Jazz Band in Concert.” Special guest Australian cornet
master Bob Barnard performs traditional jazz classics.
