Philadanco to perform at Sangamon Auditorium

SPRINGFIELD – The Philadelphia Dance Company, Philadanco, will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, September 29, at the University of Illinois at Springfield’s Sangamon Auditorium, sponsored by The Persian Rug Center.  Celebrating its 31st season, the company has established itself as one of America’s foremost dance ensembles and continues to thrill audiences throughout the world with adventurous choreography, bright new talent, and dances treasured by aficionados everywhere.

Arts and culture provide us with a universal language to communicate our emotions and best reflect who we are as a people, and dance is an art form steeped in universally recognized expressions of the human spirit.  Philadanco, and what it represents, is a fitting tribute to that focus.  Labess, one of the pieces to be performed, is named for a Tunisian expression meaning, in the face of all that we must confront in life each day, “It is all right…I’m okay.”  Philadanco will also present several pieces from the modern dance production Messages from the Heart, featuring the choreography of Bebe Miller and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar.   My Science, choreographed by Miller, is inspired by the biography of physicist Richard Feynman.  Featuring the music of Led Zeppelin, the piece plays with images of heavy water, the collision of matter, and the mechanics of relationship.  Zollar’s piece Hand Singing Song explores the use and idea of hand gestures in expressing the political and cultural aspects of a people, specifically African Americans.

A Pre-show Discussion & Questions session (PDQ) with Joan Myers Brown, founder and artistic director of Philadanco, will be held at 7:15 p.m. in the Studio Theatre, level 1 of the Public Affairs Center.  Grace Luttrell Nanavati, director emeritus of the Springfield Ballet Company, will host the discussion.

As part of Sangamon Auditorium’s Class Act series of performing arts programs for youth, Philadanco will present a lecture/demonstration at 12:30 p.m. Friday, September 28.  Excerpts to beperformed during this program include Rosa, a tribute to civil rights activist Rosa Parks, and Beauty Is Skin Deep, Ugly to the Bone.  Parents who would like their children to attend the Class Acts program should suggest this opportunity to their children’s principal and teachers.

For the Saturday evening performance, the general public may receive unlimited half-price children’s tickets with the purchase of one full-price adult ticket.  For every ticket purchased, five dollars will be donated to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.  Tickets are $29, 26, 24 and 15 and can be ordered by calling the Auditorium Ticket Office at (217) 206-6160 or (800) 207-6960 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The auditorium administrative offices can be reached at (217) 206-6150 or by e-mail at onstage@uis.edu.
