Presentation on women’s political activism to be held at UIS

SPRINGFIELD – A presentation on young women’s political activism with a special focus on the Illinois Gender Violence Act (House Bill 4407) will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 21, in the Public Affairs Center conference room C at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The event is free and open to the public.

Kaethe Morris Hoffer and Erika Goodman, representatives of the Governor’s Commission on the Status of Women, will lead the presentation on young women’s political activism and explain the details of the Act and the necessity for its support and passage into law. The Gender Violence Act will allow survivors of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and gay bashing to sue their attackers in civil court. Deputy registrars will also be on hand to register students and others to vote. Young women who attend the event will be invited to attend the Illinois Young Women’s Lobby Day in November.

The event is sponsored by the UIS Women’s Center, Women’s Issues Caucus student group, Springfield’s chapter of American Association of University Women, and the Governor’s Commission on the Status of Women in Illinois. For more information on this event or the Women’s Issues Caucus student group, call the Women’s Center at 206-7173.
