October 24, 2006

SPRINGFIELD – The Department of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Springfield will offer three master's-level certificates – in Community Health Education, Epidemiology, and Environmental Health – beginning with the 2007 spring semester.

Remi Imeokparia, associate professor of Public Health and department chair, said, "These are competency-based certificates designed to provide continuing education opportunities for health professionals without formal public health training, for those interested in life-long learning, and for mid-career professionals."

Students completing the 20-hour Graduate Certificate in Community Health Education will be able to draw on theoretical foundations of health education to communicate effectively with various audiences in the community. Kathy DeBarr, associate professor of Public Health, will serve as coordinator for this certificate.

Students completing the 20-hour Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology will develop analytic and computer skills to quantitatively relate epidemiologic theories necessary to fill specialized roles in public health practice. Imeokparia will be coordinator for this certificate.

Students completing the 16-hour Environmental Health Certificate will acquire the basic skills necessary to understand the scope, values, goals, and potential of environmental health and protection efforts.  Imeokparia noted that this certificate could also serve as preparation for those who plan to sit for the Licensed Environmental Health Practitioner exam. Sharron LaFollette, associate professor of Environmental Studies, will coordinate this certificate.

Imeokparia said that the course schedules are designed to accommodate working professionals who are interested in obtaining an advanced professional credential. Certificate coursework may also be credited toward a master's degree in Public Health at UIS.

For additional information, including certificate application forms and details about the application process, contact the UIS Public Health department at 217/206-6301.

Registration for UIS' 2007 spring semester, which runs from January 16 through May 12, is ongoing for currently admitted students; others should contact the UIS Office of Admissions at 217/206-4847.
