UIS to host lecture on Australian environmental issues

October 16, 2006

SPRINGFIELD – "Environmental Issues in Australia Today" is the topic of a lecture scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, October 30, in Brookens Auditorium, located on the lower level of Brookens Library at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The program is free and open to the public.

Featured speaker will be Dr. Linsday Hutley, a lecturer in the Department of Environmental Science at Charles Darwin University, Darwin, Australia, and recognized around the world as an expert on the management of tropical wetlands and savannas. In his presentation he will draw on the most recent studies related to environmental issues in Australia, as well as long-standing issues related to invasive species, land use policy, and indigenous land management.

On sabbatical this semester from Charles Darwin, Huntley has recently taken part in a series of meetings and conferences in Europe related to climate studies.  His visit to UIS is intended to help promote the exchange program between UIS and CDU, particularly in the areas of the science and environmental studies.

UIS sponsors of the event are the Office of International Programs, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Public Affairs and Administration, the UIS Speakers Fund, Students Allied for a Greener Earth, and the Inter-Club Council Board.

For more information, contact Jonathan GoldbergBelle, director of the Office of International Programs, by phone at 206-8319, or send an e-mail to intprog@uis.edu.
