October 11, 2006

SPRINGFIELD – During the 2007 summer semester the University of Illinois at Springfield will offer a 16-day experience in Greece for students who enroll in English 359 Greek Mythology. The trip will be led by Assistant Professor of English Donna Alfano Bussell and Associate Professor of English Karen Moranski.

While the trip is also open to non-students, space is limited to a maximum of 18 participants and UIS students will be given priority.

Said Bussell, "This is the best way to see a beautiful country and its many antiquities because everything we’ll see in Greece has a story behind it. Discovering new facets of these stories as we go will make this a rich and memorable study-abroad experience."

Participants will spend the first three weeks of the summer session on campus reading works by Homer, Sophocles, and other classical authors in preparation for the trip. Then, from June 27 to July 13, students will continue their study in Greece, visiting many sites central to mythology and classical culture including the Parthenon in Athens; the Temple of Poseidon near the Aegean Sea; Delphi; Sparta; the new archeological finds in Nemea; the island of Crete, where they will explore ancient Minoan civilization; and the ancient amphitheatre at Epidavros, where they will attend a performance.

Cost of the trip – $3,600 plus UIS tuition and fees – includes round-trip air fare from Chicago O’Hare to Athens; all transportation while in Greece; some meals; hotel; baggage handling, porterage, and transfers; entrance fees; a full-time tour guide; and some gratuities.

The deadline to register is February 1, 2007.

To apply, contact Jonathan GoldbergBelle, director of UIS' Office of International Programs, at 217/206-8319. For more information, contact Bussell by phone at 217/206-8091 or by e-mail at dbuss3@uis.edu.  Additional information, including an application and itinerary, is available at www.uis.edu/internationalprograms/gepprog_greekliterature.htm.
