UIS to host “Love Makes a Family” touring exhibit

October 6, 2006

SPRINGFIELD – The Family Diversity Project’s touring exhibit "Love Makes a Family: Portraits of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People and their Families" will make a stop on Wednesday, October 11, in the Student Center, located in the Student Life Building on the University of Illinois at Springfield campus. UIS will also host a reception beginning at 6:30 that evening. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

"Love Makes a Family" is an attempt to cut through current political controversies to demonstrate that love, caring, and connection are basic to all families, including LGBT families. The exhibit features photographs by Gigi Kaeser that depict lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people of all races along with their families in familiar settings.  The photos are accompanied by text that Peggy Gillespie drew from in-depth interviews she conducted with each person pictured. In these interviews, people spoke candidly about their lives, their relationships, and the ways in which they cope with the realities of prejudice, bias, and intolerance on a day-to-day basis.

Ten productions of the exhibit have been touring nationwide since 1996, and have traveled to more than 1,000 communities. The exhibit's stops -- at universities, schools, public libraries, corporate headquarters, statehouses, and houses of worship -- are designed to support the grassroots efforts of LGBT activists, friends, and allies and to help dismantle the destructive power of prejudice and intolerance, thus making the world a safer place for everyone.

UIS sponsors of the event are the Housing Office and Housing Residents Council, Diversity Task Force, Office of Student Life, Campus Health Service, Women’s Studies Program, Student Activities Committee, Women’s Center, Queer-Straight Student Alliance, Women’s Issues Caucus, and the UIS chapter of College Democrats.

Family Diversity Project is a nonprofit educational organization based in Amherst, Massachusetts.
