The event will examine implications that these and other recent disasters have, for those in the helping professions as well as for other concerned citizens. Featured speakers will be Mike Townsend, UIS associate professor emeritus of Social Work, and Michelle Boonaerts, a recent graduate of the Social Work program. Townsend and Boonaerts will share their perspectives and lead a discussion of the issues that these disasters have produced.

Boonaerts was among the first responders to provide social work services to displaced victims of Hurricane Katrina at the Houston Astrodome. Acting as a “rogue social worker,” she spent two weeks assisting elderly refugees, generally considered among the most vulnerable.  Currently she is a substitute teacher in an urban school district in the St. Louis metro area and in 2006 will serve a summer internship in Belgium that will focus on achieving peace through international cultural exchange programs for young people.
