UIS to host Civic Engagement Forum
October 31, 2005
SPRINGFIELD – The University of Illinois at Springfield and Illinois Campus Compact will co-sponsor the fifth in a six-part series of Civic Engagement Forums from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, November 10, in conference room C/D in the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus.
The program is free and open to the public; however P-16 education administrators, faculty, and students engaged in service learning, as well as anyone with an interest in civic engagement, civic responsibility, or service learning are especially encouraged to attend.
Civic Engagement Forums are designed to initiate and facilitate a “dialog of democracy” about actions that can be taken, individually and collectively, to focus attention on the importance of civic learning and civic engagement to Illinois’ entire educational system. Statewide, educational and political leaders are coming together at these forums with members of the community to “Build a Common P-16 Civic Engagement Agenda in Illinois.”
The final forum will be held November 17 at DePaul University.
Core panel members of the forum are: Paul Pribbenow, president, Rockford College; Lisa Hernandez, Lt. Governor’s Office; Jerry Fuller, Associated Colleges of Illinois; Becky Cook Kendell, United Way of Rock River Valley; Cynthia Woods, Illinois School Board Association; Kathy Engelken, Illinois Campus Compact; Sandi Gillilan, Illinois Board of Higher Education; Mike Mangan, Illinois Resource Center; and local legislators.
The Civic Engagement Forum Series is supported by the Governor’s Office, Lt. Governor’s Office, Illinois Board of Higher Education, Illinois State Board of Education, Associated Colleges of Illinois, Illinois Civic Mission Coalition, Illinois Association of School Boards, Illinois Community College Board, Intergenerational Initiative, and Illinois Resource Center. For more information, call Illinois Campus Compact at 815/226-4109.
