UIS Music to present percussionist Ronnie Engel in concertOctober 31, 2005SPRINGFIELD – Percussionist and avant garde artist Ronnie Engel will appear in concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, November 12, in Brookens Auditorium, located on the lower level of Brookens Library on campus at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The concert is free and open to the public; however donations supporting UIS Music will be accepted at the door.
UIS sponsors of the event are the World Percussion Ensemble, Office of Student Life, and UIS Music. Engel is a contemporary avant-garde drummer/percussionist whose skills have been presented in an array of contexts, including film and TV, music-theater, performance art, modern dance, orchestral, jazz, and other musical genres. In addition to Euro-American drumming and arts, for much of the past 27 years he has been involved with the drumming and arts of Africa, Asia, Brazil, Cuba, India, Indonesia, Ireland, the Middle East, and Native America. Engel’s recent CD, phalse color, was reviewed in Modern Drummer as “series of interesting soundscapes...On the standout track “Pluto’s Absence” the range of sounds…is staggering...a fascinating example of what electronics can do for percussion.” For more information, contact Todd Cranson in the UIS Music program, by e-mail at rcran2@uis.edu or by phone at 206-7549.
