  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UIS Visual Arts Gallery to present “Digital Environments”

October 19, 2005

Some images by Michael Miller, whose work is on display now in the UIS Visual Arts Gallery in an exhibit titled "Digital Environments."

SPRINGFIELD – “Digital Environments,” works by Michael Miller, will be on display at the Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Illinois at Springfield from November 1 through 23.  The gallery will host an evening with the artist on Thursday, November 10, beginning at 4:30 p.m. with a Friends of the Gallery Reception. An artist’s talk will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m.  The talk, receptions, and exhibit are free and open to the public.

Miller is chair of the Visual Arts Program at UIS, where he teaches painting and drawing. His work combines the unique appearance of digital imagery with traditional painting and printmaking processes, producing hybrid works of luminous color. “The way that a computer software program ‘draws’ is unique and produces a new vocabulary of the visual,” he observes. “Just as the popularization of photography in the 20th century altered the thinking of artists and thus their practice of making art, digital imagery will alter the appearance and content of all future art.”
