UIS faculty member publishes new book on gay law and politics

October 13, 2005

SPRINGFIELD – Jason Pierceson, assistant professor of Political and Legal Studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield, is the author of Courts, Liberalism, and Rights: Gay Law and Politics in the United States and Canada, a new book published by Temple University Press.

Pierceson’s book guides readers through a discussion of liberalism, court rulings, and the progress that gays and lesbians have made in U.S and Canadian courts and focuses on the interplay between law and politics on this issue.  In a discussion encompassing public law, comparative politics, political culture, liberal political theory, and institutionalism, Pierceson argues that courts do have the ability to affect social change, especially when a judiciary with broad interpretive powers encounters a political culture that endorses a set of rights that recognizes the inherent dignity and worth of every individual.

Reviewers have called the book “passionate scholarship at its best,” “a thoughtful defense of judicial activism,” and “theoretically rich and grounded in diverse literature.”

Pierceson came to UIS this fall from St. Norbert College, DePere, Wisconsin, where he taught courses in U.S. politics and government, judicial process and behavior, and constitutional and administrative law. He received his Ph.D. in Politics and Public Law at Brandeis University in 2003.

More information about Courts, Liberalism, and Rights is available at www.temple.edu/tempress/titles/1804_reg.html, or contact Pierceson at 206-7842.
