WUIS Public Radio to air observance of John Lennon’s 65th birthday

October 5, 2005

SPRINGFIELD – On Sunday, October 9, Public Radio WUIS 91.9 FM will pay tribute to music icon John Lennon on what would have been his 65th birthday by airing an hour-long memorial and celebration of his life and death.

Beginning at 5 p.m., the program contains five pieces with or about Lennon and hosted by NPR art correspondent Lynn Neary:

“On Ed Sullivan,” an audio essay by Neary, features live Beatles performances and 1963-64 fan club Christmas messages.

“All We Are Saying,” by Barrett Golding, presents Lennon in his own words and music talking about peace, family, and art.

“The Day John Lennon Died,” by Paul Ingles, offers fans’ recollections of how they heard the news of Lennon’s death and how deeply his life affected their own.

“NYC/LA Radio 12/8/1980” and “20th Anniversary Mourners: Imagine 12/8/2000” is found-sound from The Professor -- radio recorded the night of Lennon’s death, and mourners 20 years later at the Strawberry Fields memorial in Central Park.

“Pop Vultures: Grief,” by Kate Sullivan and Vince DeLorca, looks at Lennon’s “God” as grief counseling, from the radio series Pop Vultures.

Crafted from new and classic radio shows, this special was mixed by Robin Wise of Sound Imagery; executive producer was Barrett Golding.
