  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UIS to host examination of HipHop culture

October 4, 2005

SPRINGFIELD – The African American Studies program at the University of Illinois at Springfield will host “In the Mix: Cross-Dialogues Regarding HipHop Culture,” Friday and Saturday, November 4 and 5, at Springfield’s Southeast High School and on the UIS campus.

The two-day symposium is designed to facilitate discussion about what has been called “one of the most important phenomena in popular culture since television.” Activities will include panel presentations, breakout discussions, performances, films and critiques, a fashion show, and an awards banquet. In addition, a teacher workshop on “Using Contemporary Youth Culture in the Classroom” will feature a presentation by nationally known scholar Jon Yasin, a professor in the English Basic Skills program at Bergen Community College, Paramus, New Jersey.

Local high school students are invited to submit short essays on the topics “How HipHop Affects My Life” and “The Meaning of HipHop” for a chance to win cash and other prizes.

UIS and Southeast students, faculty, and staff will be admitted free to all speakers and panel discussions.

Advance registration is suggested. Cost is $25/person before October 15 and $40/person thereafter. Cost to students with valid ID is $20. All registrations include admission to the Awards Banquet and HipHop Extravaganza on Friday, November 4. Because of space and catering limitations, admission to the banquet and extravaganza is by advance registration only.

UIS sponsors of the event are African American Studies, Sankofa, the Women’s Center, Capital Scholars, Speakers Awards Committee, and the Division of Student Affairs.

For more information or a registration packet, contact Kamau Kemayó, UIS assistant professor and chair, African American Studies, by e-mail at kkema2@uis.edu or by phone at 206-8248; or UIS student Gloria Sampson by e-mail at gsamp01s@uis.edu or by phone at 206-7419.
