UIS to host seminar on domestic violence

October 4, 2005

SPRINGFIELD – The Women’s Issues Caucus at the University of Illinois at Springfield will host a seminar on preventing domestic violence at 11 a.m. Monday, October 17, in conference room G, lower level of the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus. The program is free and open to the public. Participants will be served lunch.

Vicki Crompton

Featured speaker will be Vicki Crompton, co-author of the book Saving Beauty from the Beast: How to Protect Your Daughter from an Unhealthy Relationship. In 1986, Crompton’s 15-year-old daughter, Jenny, was killed by an abusive boyfriend. Since then, Crompton has devoted her life to speaking about dating violence and abuse and to dispelling the myth that only troubled girls with self-esteem problems and few friends are vulnerable to dating violence. Her written work includes victims’ personal accounts, discusses prevention, gives warning signs that can alert parents that their daughter is in an unhealthy relationship, and presents suggestions for opening a dialog on the subject.

The seminar is presented as part of a week-long series of events promoting awareness of domestic violence issues. While the program is free, donations will be accepted to benefit the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, comprised of numerous programs in Louisiana dedicated to bringing an end to violence against women and children. The group works to educate the public about the causes of violence and the resources that are available in the communities served.

Local sponsors include Sojourn Shelter and Bread Stretchers.
