Prominent abstract painter to speak at UIS Visual Arts GalleryOctober 15, 2004
SPRINGFIELD - Prominent abstract artist Robert Natkin will be on hand to open a new exhibit of his works which will be on display from November 4 through 24 at the Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Illinois at Springfield. “Robert Natkin: Paintings and Prints” will open with a talk by the artist on Thursday, November 4, at 5:30 p.m. in the gallery, followed by a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. The talk, reception, and exhibit are free and open to the public. An artist of international stature, Natkin is represented in the collections of some of the world’s major museums, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC; the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Pompidou Center in Paris; and numerous other institutions, both public and private. Much of Natkin’s work consists of expressive shapes set amid an atmospheric backdrop of shimmering veils of color. Within this framework, he creates a diverse world of abstract dramas through bold, yet subtle, interactions of form and color. This exhibit provides a comprehensive look into his body of work, and includes
10 small-scale acrylic paintings on canvas, paper, and a handkerchief, as well as five large-scale hand-pulled lithographs from the artist’s “Hitchcock Series,” named for the famous director whose work, Natkin wrote, “prepares me to admit and inspires me to accept my collusions with the demons within.” The Visual Arts Gallery is located in room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. For further information about the exhibit or the gallery, contact Emily Laverty at 206-6506. |
