UIS seminar will discuss domestic violenceOctober 12, 2004SPRINGFIELD - The Women’s Issues Caucus student group at the University of Illinois at Springfield will host a lunchtime seminar on “Domestic Violence: What Can You Do to Help?” from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, October 21, in conference room D, located on the lower level of the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus. Held in conjunction with Young Women’s Day of Action, the program is free and open to the public. Featured speaker will be Jodi Morgan, from Sojourn Shelter, who will present information on the broad issue of domestic violence, as well as on healthy and unhealthy relationships. Participants will learn the warning signs of a potentially violent relationship and what they can do if they, or someone they know, is in an abusive relationship. Items from WIC’s Clothesline Project collection will also display t-shirts on which people have written their thoughts and messages about domestic violence and other issues -- many are personal memorials or tributes. National Young Women’s Day of Activism was begun 11 years ago to commemorate the death of Rosie Jiménez on October 3, 1977, in a Texas hospital where she had been brought following an illegal, back alley abortion. The event seeks to unite young women across the country around issues of reproductive and sexual freedom, racial and economic justice, and to end violence against women. Seminar sponsors are Sojourn Shelter and the UIS Women’s Center and Women’s Studies program. For more information, contact Candi Clouse, president of the Women’s Issues Caucus at UIS, at 206-8205.
